Winthrop Family Week to Offer a Variety of Virtual Events

HIGHLIGHTS

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The traditional Family Day will stretch out to Family Week this year from Oct. 5-10, and it will be fully virtual.

Due to COVID-19, the university won’t be able to hold the traditional weekend activities so instead, the Office of New Student & Family Programs and the Family Day committee will hold Virtual Family Week 2020. The week will feature a mix of live virtual events (all listed in Eastern Standard Time) and videos/events for families to view on their own time.

Callie Smith ’13, director of the Office of New Student & Family Programs, said the virtual experience will still give families the opportunity to engage with the Winthrop community and learn more about the campus. “While we are not inviting our wonderful Eagle families to campus this year, we are excited to continue the tradition of celebrating them through the spirit of this event!”

So what’s happening that week?

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Send in your best Mac-N-Cheese recipe. Students and families can submit their family’s favorite combination and the three best will be served at Thomson Café and voted on by students, faculty and staff.
  • Show us your best family photo! E-mail Orientation@winthrop.edu your family photo to be posted on the Winthrop University Family Programs Facebook page, and the family with the most “likes” by Friday, Oct. 9 at noon will win a prize package!
  • Get to know Winthrop leadership and learn about campus updates during a virtual lunch on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
  • Hear academic presentations from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Visual and Performing Arts, and University College, in addition to the Winthrop Think College.
  • Learn about family history, or the study of genealogy, basics from Archives Director Gina Price White ’83.
  • Participate in various virtual yoga classes.
  • Watch a short video by the International Center on Winthrop alumni who have exciting careers and proudly represent Winthrop on a global stage.
  • Take a virtual tour of Dacus Library, Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections, and the residence halls.
  • Learn about Winthrop’s history through the Archives’ exhibitions on “The March for Justice: Winthrop Women Faculty and Their Struggle for Equal Pay 1915-1920” and other memorabilia.
