Winthrop Galleries Honors Late Professor in Fall Exhibit

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA This fall, Winthrop University Galleries will remember long-time artist and influential Winthrop University Professor Paul Martyka (1950-2016). "Seeds to Sow," an exhibition detailing Martyka's career, will be on display in the Rutledge and Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Galleries Sept. 17-Nov. 16 with a public reception Sept. 21 from 6:30-8 p.m.

"Seeds to Sow" showcases the broad spectrum of his work in printmaking, painting and mixed media from his years as a student in Michigan up until 2015. By observing a timeline of his career, the high level of artistry given to his methods and creative vision becomes evident. His use of a geometric iconography, attention to color and continual experimentation show us his distinct visual style. In addition to the works he made independently, the exhibition will feature collaborative works with students, highlighting his attention to the development of future artists.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Martyka's family has established a fundraiser to support the exhibition and educational programming at Winthrop. Funds raised will be used to create a catalog for the exhibition and support educational programming for student learning at Winthrop. All donors will be invited to a private reception at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 preceding the public opening reception of the exhibition from 6:30 — 8 p.m. A copy of the exhibition catalog will be available to supporters who give $100 or more. Additional funds collected will be used to support undergraduate scholarship in the arts through the Paul Martyka Scholarship Fund and in support of local arts projects. Donations are being collected through a Go Fund Me fundraiser.
