Winthrop Mourns Passing of Senior Sport Management Student

  • His fraternity is coordinating a candlelight memorial on Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at the campus amphitheatre. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 30 at 11 a.m. at The Brook, 8328 Parklane Road, Columbia, S.C.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – A Winthrop University student who was a student leader and sport management major passed away on May 22.

Senior Donald Jaylen Scott Jr., of Blythewood, South Carolina, was an active brother of the Psi Kappa chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Friends said he was a thoughtful young man who was passionate about his fraternity.  

“Donald was one of the kindest student leaders who was always willing to help and serve in the Winthrop and local community,” said Kinyata Adams Brown, associate dean of engagement, diversity, and inclusive excellence. “He had been a dedicated member of the Psi Kappa chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity since spring 2021.” 

Scott previously worked as a student staff member in the DiGiorgio Campus Center. “His family, fraternity brothers and friends were extremely important to him,” Brown said. “His smile and presence on our campus will greatly be missed.” 

Additionally, Jason Chung, his faculty advisor, described Scott as a “nice and personable student that everyone liked.” 

His fraternity is coordinating a candlelight memorial on Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at the campus amphitheatre, and members welcome the Winthrop family and community to attend.

The public viewing will be held on Monday, May 29, from 2-5 p.m. at Leevy’s Funeral Home, 1831 Taylor Street, Columbia, South Carolina. Additionally, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity will host the chapter memorial on Monday, May 29, at 5:30 p.m. at Leevy’s Funeral Home.

The Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at The Brook Church, 8328 Parklane Road, Columbia, South Carolina. Interment will follow directly after at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens, 11120 Two Notch Road, Elgin, South Carolina.
