ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Winthrop University's Board of Trustees voted unanimously June 23 to extend President Dan Mahony's contract and to give him an outstanding evaluation. The resolution adds an additional year to Mahony's current contract, which extends now to June 30, 2019.

Board Chair Karl Folkens noted that individual board members' evaluations, analysis of performance planning objectives, Mahony's stewardship of the institution, continued efforts to realize strategic initiatives of the Winthrop Plan, and a host of other accomplishments led the executive committee to make the recommendation.

"As he has led Winthrop through the first year of our strategic plan, Dan Mahony has the confidence of the board because of his vision for where the university needs to go and for his effective leadership style," Folkens said. "We are pleased to recommend the rating of exceeds expectations and for Dan to receive the maximum salary increase if such an increase were to be awarded by the State Agency Head Salary Commission for 2017-18."

The Winthrop board does not set the compensation level for the president. Instead, the board's recommendation goes to the commission, which may forward a salary increase recommendation to the State Budget and Control Board.

Mahony will begin his third year at Winthrop in July.
