Winthrop Student-Athletes Equal Best Semester GPA

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Winthrop student-athletes equaled the highest semester grade point average in the athletics department's history in the fall 2016 semester.

They achieved a 3.16 GPA on a 4.0 scale and established a new cumulative GPA of 3.18. Additionally, 65 percent of Winthrop's student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher during the fall.

"I could not be more proud of our student-athletes for the hard work they've put in this year. These fantastic results are a clear indication of their commitment to scholastic achievement and what it means to be an Eagle," said Winthrop Athletics Director Ken Halpin.

According to figures announced by Joanna Harris, assistant athletic director for academic services, 198 of Winthrop's 326 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA during the fall semester, and of that group, 25 finished with a perfect 4.0 GPA to earn recognition on the President's List. Another 92 earned a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99 for Dean's List honors. A total of 22 student-athletes received their degrees during the Dec. 17 Commencement ceremony.

"Our student-athletes put in hours of work behind the scenes, not only in their sport but also in the classroom. It is always exciting to see that work pay off," said Harris. "Our faculty and Student Services staff across campus should be commended as well for the support they provide our student-athletes throughout the year."

A total of 10 teams achieved a GPA above a 3.0 for the fall semester. The list includes: men's golf, men's soccer, men's tennis, women's cross country & track, women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis, lacrosse and softball.

Two men's teams - basketball and soccer - achieved the highest semester GPA in the history of the programs. Men's basketball achieved a 2.90 mark while men's soccer finished with a 3.38 GPA.

Women's tennis compiled the highest team GPA for the fall at 3.50. The top men's team GPA was accomplished by the men's tennis team with a 3.42 GPA. The average female GPA for the fall was 3.27, while the male GPA was 3.02, which ranks as the second highest in history.
