ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Nearly three-fourths of Winthrop University’s student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 grade point average in 2019-20, an achievement that placed the Eagles second in the Big South Conference (BSC).

The BSC announced recently that a league-record 64.83 percent of eligible student-athletes earned Presidential Honor Roll status for their work in the classroom in 2019-20.  To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently completed academic year, and this past season, 2,264 out of 3,492 eligible student-athletes achieved the benchmark.  In addition, the 64.83 percentage marks the first time above 60 percent.

Winthrop placed 74.62 percent of its 260 eligible student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll.

Winthrop administrators are proud of the university’s student-athletes’ achievements. “This year has been like none other and all of them persevered through all the changes and challenges that were thrown at them,” said Claire Mooney-Melvin, director of Academic and Student Services. "Our students-athletes continue to impress me with their dedication on and off the field/court."

In addition, the BSC had 226 student-athletes receive the Commissioner’s Award in 2019-20 for having a 4.0 GPA, with 23 of those from Winthrop.
