Winthrop Students Shine at S.C. Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Conference

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A total of 19 Winthrop students participated in the conference.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University was well represented at the 2021 South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) Conference in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. 

Kristi Schoepfer, chair of the Department of Physical Education, Sport and Human Performance, said a total of 19 Winthrop students participated in the conference, where they participated in competitions, attended presentations and networked with field professionals from across the state. 

 Highlights included:

*Winthrop students placed third among 10 teams in the annual Superstars Competition.

*Several students presented: 

“From Beaches to Bleachers,” which explained how recreational games can address physical education standards

Garrett Bowers (exercise science, Kershaw) and Seth Jackson (educational studies, Lexington)

Bowers and Jackson served as president and vice president, respectively, of Future Professionals, a subcommittee of SCAHPERD that organized and ran the Superstars Competition.

Bowers also won the President’s Award for his service to SCAHPERD.

“Building Your Brand,” which explained how to use social media to advocate for your program

Macee Smith (physical education, Fort Mill)

“Comparison of Submaximal and Maximal VO2 Max Testing”

Katie Weber (exercise science, Columbia)

“Blood Pressure Variations Among Different Female Athletic Groups

Atley Livingston (physical education, Conway)

Livingston also won the Undergraduate Research Award.

*Leah Smith (exercise science, Fort Mill) was nominated and appointed to serve as the student representative for the South Carolina Association of Health Education (SCAHE).
