Winthrop to Host SC Humanities Festival Events

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Winthrop University is partnering with SC Humanities to help host the annual SC Humanities Festival, March 28-30.
  • The festival will celebrate the local history and culture of York County, engaging the citizens in lectures, discussions, films and exhibits, and facilitating partnerships between cultural organizations and community groups.

SC HumanitiesROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University is partnering with SC Humanities to help host the annual SC Humanities Festival, March 28-30.

Every year, SC Humanities sponsors the Humanities Festival in a community in South Carolina. This year’s host community is York County. The festival will celebrate the local history and culture of York County, engaging the citizens in lectures, discussions, films and exhibits, and facilitating partnerships between cultural organizations and community groups.

March 27-30:
Underexposed Film Festival YC
Dina’s Place, DiGiorgio Campus Center
The UFFyc is an award-winning, international, independent short film festival that showcases the best in indie filmmaking. Screened films focus on strength in storytelling, and include Q & A sessions with the filmmakers afterwards. Films were submitted from more than countries across all seven continents.

• March 27: Block A, 7-9 p.m.
• March 28: Block B, 7-9 p.m.
• March 29: Block C, 3-5 p.m.; Block D, 7-9 p.m.
• March 30: Masterclass, 10 a.m.-noon; Block E, 2-4 p.m.; Block F, 7-9:30 p.m.

Winthrop Historians Presentation and Exhibit
The Little Chapel
The Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collection’s’ staff members, Professor of History Eddie Lee and Assistant Professor of History Jennifer Dixon-McKnight join forces to share stories about the history of South Carolina, specifically the Colonial South and Civil Rights.

March 28-30:
Exhibits: “One More Round of Applause” and “A House of Many Stories”
Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections
Through displays of books, documents and photographs, the exhibits celebrate 132 years of famous humanitarian guests to campus and writers in the collection.
March 28-29, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; March 30, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

March 28-31:
“At Home at the Zoo”
Johnson Studio Theatre, 115 Johnson Hall
This two-act play, staged by the Department of Theatre and Dance, takes place in New York City. With dark humor, it explores both the love and the cruelty that people inflict on each other every day.
March 28-30, 8 p.m.; March 31, 2 p.m.

March 29-31:
Gianni Schicchi Opera
Barnes Recital Hall
Assistant Professor Jeffery McEvoy directs this production by Puccini featuring piano and singing in Italian.
March 29-30, 7:30 p.m.; March 31, 3 p.m.
Cost: $15 for adults; $10 for Winthrop faculty and staff; $5 for Winthrop students

Winthrop Authors Book Signing and Readings
Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Winthrop
Sarah and Morri ’95 Creech will read selections from their award-winning books.
11 a.m.-noon

March 28:
Magnetic Poetry Table Activity
DiGiorgio Campus Center Lobby
Winthrop students of the Writing Center, Literary Society and Sigma Tau Delta will create poems with festival goers.
11 a.m. – Noon

March 30:
Women of Winthrop University Poetry Readings
Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections
Winthrop faculty will read their poetry.
11 a.m.-noon; the same event will also be held from 5-6 p.m. on Friday, March 29, at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main Street.

March 30:
Stories of the Women at the Shelter
Salvation Army, 119 Charlotte Avenue
Winthrop students will read poems written by women on the shelter.
2 p.m.

March 30:
An Evening with the Friendship Nine and City Girls
The Palmetto Room at McCrory’s, 150 E. White Street
Professor of Political Science Adolphus Belk Jr. will host a panel of Friendship Nine and City Girls members, pioneers of Rock Hill’s “Jail, No Bail” Civil Rights Movement.
6:30-8 p.m.

Winthrop will also be a stopping point on the Drive the Arts: Rock Hill Public Art Tour. Maps for the self-guided tour are available at the Center for the Arts or at www.womensartinitiative.org.
