ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The Student Veterans of Winthrop University and University College Academic Advising will honor veterans' service to the country on Thursday, Nov. 10

An 11 a.m. ceremony will take place on the steps in front of Byrnes Auditorium. There will be an address by Retired Marine Corps Major Mike Hemlepp and the reading of the names of those service members from North and South Carolina who sacrificed their lives during the Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) conflicts. Winthrop President Dan Mahony will give closing remarks.

Veterans Day is officially recognized on Nov. 11, but organizer Katie Sardelli, director of University College Academic Advising, said Winthrop's ceremony was scheduled during the university's common time to allow more people to attend and participate.

In addition to the Nov. 10 ceremony, the campus will recognize veterans during the week of Nov. 7-11 by marking several campus trees with a yellow ribbon and bow. Members of the campus community will sponsor a ribbon/dedicate a tree, beginning on Nov. 8. All proceeds will be donated to a local veterans charity on behalf of the Student Veterans of Winthrop University organization.

There will also be small note cards attached to American flags which will line Scholars Walk on Nov. 11 with special messages from faculty, staff and students.

Winthrop's student veterans will enjoy breakfast and lunch on Thursday thanks to local restaurants who donated meals. Organizers thanked Groucho's, Chick-Fil-A at Cherry Road and ARAMARK for their recognition of the service of our student veterans.
