ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Special delivery! This summer Winthrop University staff from the offices of Admissions, Alumni Relations, University Communications and Marketing, and more – even Interim President George W. Hynd – hand-delivered “I’m a Winthrop Eagle!” lawn signs to incoming freshmen in the Carolinas.

While all participants practiced social distancing during the delivery process, there were still opportunities to personally connect.

Hynd dropped off a lawn sign to incoming social studies teaching major Lleyton Spivey. Spivey was Wando High School’s student body president.

“Lleyton said Winthrop was his first choice because of our outstanding teacher education program!” Hynd said. “I’m looking forward to seeing him on campus.”

Admissions Counselor Kim Foster remembered pulling up to one house and seeing a new Eagle and her mother excitedly waiting for her on their porch.

“The mom raved about how excited she was for her daughter to attend Winthrop, as both she and her husband are alumni,” Foster explained. “She also expressed appreciation for us personally delivering signs as it showed Winthrop's personal touch and care for students. It was heartwarming to see them so enthusiastic for the delivery and their smiling faces when I arrived. Even though it was something small, it meant the world to this family, and their interaction made my day.”

Admissions Counselor Craig Gero had a heartfelt conversation with an incoming student whose mother had passed away. The mother had wanted her daughter to attend Winthrop, so she felt like she was fulfilling her mother’s wish.

What Other New Students are Saying:

“Winthrop University has been my dream school since I was a seventh grader in middle school. It’s hard to believe my wildest dream is now a reality. My cup is overflowing with excitement to be a part of Winthrop University and its honorable Call Me MISTER program. I’m proud to say I’m an EAGLE RISING. GO EAGLES!”

– Jaquarius Norman, middle level education major

“I chose Winthrop because of the warm and welcoming atmosphere that greeted me as soon as I walked in the door! Everyone was so kind and truly wanted to know about me. It was on my Winthrop tour that I realized that I wanted to become a teacher and go to this amazing school. I also fell in love with the small, diverse campus and the numerous campus life opportunities.”

– Isabelle Fleischer, early childhood education major

“The reason why I chose to go to Winthrop is because within the process of moving from one stage of my life to another, no other college e-mailed me and stayed in contact with me like Winthrop did. The university made me feel as if they wanted me to attend Winthrop.”

– Ethan Oxendine, computer science major
