ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — South Carolina's oldest CROP Hunger Walk will take place Sunday, Nov. 4 in what is the event's 41st anniversary.

Rev. Ricky Howell, organizer and a United Methodist campus minister with the Winthrop Wesley Foundation, said participants will gather on the Dinkins Hall lawn at Winthrop University, travel down Oakland Ave. and through downtown Rock Hill for the 3.5 mile walk.

Registration for the CROP Hunger Walk will begin at 2 p.m. and the walk kicks off at 3 p.m. Prior to the kick off, walkers will be treated to various educational and fun activities aimed at children and families.

CanStruction, a competition encouraging groups to create sculptures out of canned food items, will return as part of this year's festivities. Participants in the CROP Hunger Walk will view the creations at St. John's United Methodist Church in downtown Rock Hill and vote on their favorite. The creations are made by youth groups, college student groups and other groups participating in the walk. After the walk, the canned food items will be donated to local food pantries.

York County's CROP Hunger Walk has raised more than $775,000 in 40 years, with close to $200,000 remaining with local agencies.

CROP Walk is the community hunger appeal of Church World Service. The organization represents 36 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches in the United States working with indigenous churches and organizations in more than 80 countries.

There is no admission price for the walk, but participants are encouraged to bring at least one canned food item to be distributed to a local food pantry.
