ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – York County participants in the CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, Nov. 6, at Winthrop University will do their part to help fight the local and global food crisis.
The 2022 walk will start at Winthrop’s Dinkins Hall with sign-in/registration opening at 2 p.m. and the walk starting at 3 p.m.
Organizer Kevin McCoy said the money raised will go to three local agencies - Pilgrims’ Inn, Tender Hearts Ministries and the Clover Area Assistance Center - and to Church World Service hunger relief projects in 35 countries:
1. In Latin American, Asian and African countries, CROP funds are assisting with agriculture training, tools and seeds; access to fresh water wells; literacy programs; health clinics; and income generating programs that help break the cycle of hunger and poverty.
2. CROP funds are providing disaster assistance to families affected by hurricanes Fiona and Ian. More than $1.5 million in emergency support is being provided to help in the U.S. and Caribbean. Already more than 17,000 hygiene kits, clean-up flood buckets and blankets have been sent to hurricane affected counties in Florida.
3. CROP funds are also helping Ukrainian refugee families who are fleeing the war to Moldova by supporting a network of food pantries and refugee accommodation centers which provide safety, housing, hot meals and emergency supplies.
There is no fee to participate in this 44th annual walk on Nov. 6, but walkers are encouraged to raise funds for hunger relief. Walkers and teams can sign up online here. Participants also are encouraged to bring canned food items to the event which will be donated to local food pantries.
York County’s CROP Hunger Walk has raised more than $811,000 in 43 years.
