York County Sports Hall of Fame to Induct Nine Members

  • Cid Carvalho is one of the nine inductees selected for the Class of 2024. He coached the men’s and women’s tennis teams for a total of 33 years, winning 14 Big South Conference Coach of the Year Awards, 21 Big South Conference Women’s Championships, five Big South Conference Men’s Championships, and 21 NCAA Tournament bids across both programs.
  • Recognized as the all-time wins leader in Big South Conference history, Carvalho was inducted into the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Big South Conference Hall of Fame in 2022.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Cid Carvalho ’82, ’89, Winthrop University’s all-time winningest tennis coach, will be one of nine new members inducted May 1 into the York County Sports Hall of Fame.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center. 

Inductees were chosen by the York County Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee which accepted and evaluated nominations.

“The York County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 is as diverse of a group that has ever been inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said Chris Miller, selection committee chair of the York County Sports Hall of Fame. “With eight sports represented, five coaches, four players and a journalist, we feel this nine- member group is extremely deserving. Each of them have long, championship winning careers that have made York County a great place to live.” 

Carvalho coached the men’s and women’s tennis teams for a total of 33 years, winning 14 Big South Conference Coach of the Year Awards, 21 Big South Conference Women’s Championships, five Big South Conference Men’s Championships, and 21 NCAA Tournament bids across both programs. He retired with a record of 776-465. 

Recognized as the all-time wins leader in Big South Conference history, Carvalho was inducted into the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Big South Conference Hall of Fame in 2022.

The other inductees for the Class of 2024 are: Jim Barnes, wrestling coach; Enzo Martinez, soccer player; Barry Byers, sports writer; Steven Gribble, football player and golf coach; Devonte Holloman, football player; Karis Watson, volleyball player; Sherer Lee Gordon Hopkins, basketball player and coach; and Jonathan Meeks, football player.
