Safe Zones

About Us

Safe Zones is a program designed to increase understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues and to provide identified safe zones for everyone. Safe Zones members are allies to the LGBTQIA+ population and are identified by displaying a Safe Zones symbol (see below). This symbol signifies to all students that this zone is safe and free from discrimination. Members are required to attend a formal orientation.

Safe ZoneGoals and Objectives

The Safe Zones program is designed to promote acceptance of diversity on the Winthrop University campus and to aid in the reduction of homophobia and the stigmas associated with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, and asexual people. Safe Zone members believe that regardless of sexual orientation, gender, gender expression, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, and ability you will be treated and respected as a human being.

Here are some of our goals:

  • To create a vision of a campus where all members including LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff feel accepted and safe.

  • To promote awareness of the concerns and issues that confront LGBTQIA+ members of the Winthrop community.

  • Identify people who are willing to invest time in learning more about LGBTQIA+ needs and how to address discrimination or harmful, unsafe behaviors toward them or anyone else on this campus.
