Religion and Spirituality

Many denominations are accepting and inclusive of the LGBTQ individuals. Here is a partial list of those in our area with a short definition of the denominations current status.

Lutheran

Lutheran churches have the freedom to choose individually if they are accepting of LGBT individuals. These churches are considered to be "Reconciling in Christ" congregations. Many Lutheran churches allow same-sex marriages and ordination of people in same sex relationships. Some of the local Lutheran churches that are Reconciling in Christ are listed below.

Episcopalian churches are very accepting of LGBT individuals and have been working toward full inclusion since 1976.

Metropolitan Community Church

The Metropolitan Community Church was founded specifically for outreach to LGBTQ people. There is also an emphasis on gender equality in church leadership positions. There are two churches located in Charlotte.

Unity Fellowship Church

Unity Fellowship Church is a nationwide church that was founded by Archbishop Carl Bean with LGBTQ people of color in mind.

Alliance of Baptists

The Alliance of Baptists formed in 1987 as an attempt to break away from fundamentalist resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention. The Alliance of Baptists churches are welcoming of all individuals and have made it a goal of theirs to educate people about LGBT issues.

United Church of Christ

The United Church of Christ has been a historically liberal and LGBTQ inclusive denomination. The church in charlotte has been active in Charlotte Pride and LGBTQ outreach ministries.

United Methodist

While United Methodist churches are still deliberating on the inclusion of LGBTQ people in ordainment and marriage, some churches have taken it upon themselves to join the Reconciling Ministries task force. First United Methodist Church is included in this task force and has a welcoming statement on their website affirming all sexual orientations and gender identities.
