Office Practices

  • A comprehensive office certification program that analyzes work place activities within the following categories: energy, materials and resources, transportation, indoor air quality, water, and social equity.  This is a voluntary self reported assessment program designed to assist in the education of faculty and staff about how individual practices can simultaneously advance economic vitality, ecological integrity, and social welfare.  Contact the Office of Sustainability if you would like to participate in this certification program.
  • Winthrop is host to hundreds of meetings and events each year.   When planning a meeting or and event, there are several considerations that will reduce its impact to human and natural systems.  Contact the Sustainability Office for assistance organizing an event that brings awareness to any environmental and/or social issues.
    • When planning a meeting or event . . .

      • If swag is provided to attendees, consider items that are durable for long-term use - avoid single use swag.
      • Consider web based meeting programs rather than face to face meetings.
      • Discourage balloon releases (latex and/or metallic) because of risks to wildlife and the litter they create.
    • During the meeting . . .

      • Limit use of printed material by sending information electronically before and after meeting.

  • Does your department have a need for supplies or need to purge some unused supplies?  Before making purchases, go to Swap-N-Shop to look at what items other departments have available.  Before disposing unused items, use Swap-N-Shop by posting your item(s) in the Swap-N-Shop folder.  Swap-N-Shop is a public folder in Outlook. Those with access to Swap-N-Shop are able to claim these items.  Be sure that the subject line indicates something about the posting.  For example, "Wanted: File Folders."  Put the details of the SwapNShop item or need in the body of the posting.  Make sure to give your contact information.  Once all of the items in your posting are claimed, post another Swap-N-Shop notice letting the departments know that the item is no longer available.  Contact Procurement Services with any questions or information about how to access the Swap-N-Shop folder.
