Resolution to Recognize and Honor Winthrop University’s Purple Heart Recipients and to Proclaim Winthrop University a Purple Heart University

WHEREAS, The Military Order of the Purple Heart is a Congressional Chartered Veterans Organization whose membership consists of Combat Wounded Veterans who have received the oldest military award, the Purple Heart, which was first awarded by George Washington in 1782; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and provide service to all veterans and their families; and

WHEREAS, Winthrop University has long been dedicated to our student and alumni veterans by providing veteran-specific institutional support, study and social space, dedicated computer lab, military academic credit, benefits coordinator, student organization, Purple Heart parking, mentorship, annual appreciation events, and advocacy; and

WHEREAS, Winthrop University recognizes the great courage and sacrifice required to defend our American liberties and acknowledges the immense courage required of their service,

THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Winthrop University Board of Trustees honors those Winthrop students, both past and present, who are Purple Heart recipients and hereby proclaims Winthrop University as a Purple Heart University.
