RESOLUTION TO NAME THE RICHARD W. RILEY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, SPORT, AND HUMAN SCIENCES

WHEREAS, Winthrop University is widely recognized as South Carolina's flagship institution for teacher preparation and it is that important mission that led to Winthrop's founding in 1886, and

WHEREAS, Winthrop University’s Richard W. Riley College of Education currently offers 17 degree programs and five minors, with seven majors and four of the minors in the fields of sports and human sciences, and

WHEREAS, more than half of the students in the college are in programs not entirely targeting PK-12 educators, and 

WHEREAS, many other institutions across the United States have renamed their colleges of education to include the fields of sports and human sciences, and

WHEREAS, the proposed college name is consistent with Winthrop University's Mission Statement wherein the University seeks to provide “personalized and challenging undergraduate, graduate, and continuing professional education programs of national caliber within a context dedicated to public service to the State of South Carolina,”

THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF WINTHROP UNIVERSITY that on July 1, 2023, and from that day forward, the Richard W. Riley College of Education be renamed and known as the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences.
