Resolution to Honor Mr. Timothy L. Hopkins ’83, ’85, ’00 for Meritorious Service to Winthrop University and the Board of Trustees

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Tim Hopkins served with distinction on the Winthrop Board of Trustees for 12 years as the designee of two South Carolina Governors, The Honorable Nikki R. Haley and The Honorable Henry D. McMaster; and

WHEREAS, in that time, he served as a knowledgeable chair of a number of past and current committees, including, most recently, serving as a member of the executive committee in his role as chair of the External Engagement and Athletics Committee; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins has been an exemplary example of an alumnus committed to varied service at all levels, including fundraising class agent for his peers in the Class of 1983, past president of the Kershaw County Alumni Chapter, the Alumni Association Executive Board, the Winthrop University Foundation Board, and the Winthrop University Board of Trustees; and 

WHEREAS, for his longstanding commitment and dutiful service to Winthrop, the university bestowed upon him the highest honor a Winthrop alumnus may receive--the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award--in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins, has supported, along with his wife, Jewel, the institution financially, making numerous gifts to Winthrop over the years, including endowing a scholarship to benefit future generations of students; and

WHEREAS, his dedicated service to K-12 education in South Carolina has spanned more than 38 years and resulted in his selection by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators as a 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award winner; and

WHEREAS, he has used the knowledge, skills and abilities gained from experiences as a public servant in the field of education to consistently make positive impacts on students’ lives; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hopkins began his career at Winthrop in the admissions office in 1983 following the successful completion of his bachelor’s degree program in sociology and subsequently earned both a master’s degree in guidance in 1985 and an education specialist degree in educational administration in 2000, making him a three-time Winthrop alumnus; and

THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Trustees, the President, and the Winthrop University faculty, staff and students do hereby convey their deep respect and profound gratitude to Mr. Tim Hopkins, and do commend him for outstanding meritorious service to the Board of Trustees of Winthrop University.
