Resolution on Establishing the School of Graduate, Continuing and Online Education

WHEREAS, pursuant to S.C. Code Ann. §59-125-1, et. seq., the Board of Trustees of Winthrop University is created and established as a body corporate for the purpose of effectuating the educational mission of Winthrop University;

WHEREAS, pursuant to the Winthrop University Board of Trustees Bylaws art. II, it is the Board of Trustees’ duty to “provide oversight of the University’s mission";

WHEREAS, pursuant to the Winthrop University Board of Trustees Bylaws art. §2, the Board of Trustees is empowered to consider and approve name changes of University academic units;

WHEREAS, Winthrop University has strategically prioritized the expansion of academic offerings tailored to meet the needs of post-traditional student populations, which includes the introduction of competency-based education (CBE) degrees and credentials, professional doctorates, and micro(stackable) certificates,

WHEREAS, the Board recognizes the importance of reflecting this strategic shift in the nomenclature and mission of the Graduate School,

WHEREAS, is recommended that the newly constituted "School of Graduate, Continuing, and Online Education” be designated as a degree-granting school, and further serve as the principal home for the revised Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS), acting as the cornerstone degree-seeking CBE program for the University,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Winthrop University Board of Trustees officially endorses and implements the renaming of the Graduate School to the “School of Graduate, Continuing, and Online Education” and affirms its status as a degree-granting institution, effective on or before July 1, 2024,

FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Secretary to the Board of Trustees shall certify that the Winthrop University Board of Trustees approved this resolution on the 12th Day of October, 2023, in a regular, scheduled session after public notice. Such resolution shall be maintained and publicly posted by the Secretary of the Board in a time and manner as required by law.
