Student Organizations

The department sponsors Phi Sigma Tau and Theta Alpha Kappa, national honorary student organizations that recognize superior academic performance in philosophy and religious studies, respectively.

Honorary Societies

Philosophy Honor Society (Phi Sigma Tau)
Winthrop University hosts the first chapter of in the state of South Carolina: the SC-ALPHA chapter, founded on Feb. 1, 1972. If you would like to join this society, please reach out to Dr. David Meeler at meelerd@winthrop.edu, if you meet the criteria below:

  • 3 semesters at an institution having a branch
  • At least 12 credit hours in Philosophy
  • 3.0 GPA in Philosophy
  • 3.0 GPA overall college coursework

Religious Studies Honor Society (Theta Alpha Kappa)
Winthrop University was granted a local branch in fall 2006, and inducted the first members during the spring semester 2007. If you would like to join this society, please reach out to Dr. Kristin Kiblinger at kiblingerk@winthrop.edu, if you meet the criteria below:

  • 3 semesters at an institution having a branch
  • At least 12 credit hours in Religious Studies
  • 3.5 GPA in Religious Studies
  • 3.0 GPA overall college coursework
  • The 2019 TAK and PST inductees with our faculty
