Academic Scholarships

The scholarships listed below will be awarded to students who enroll as a new freshman or transfer for the stated semester. Scholarship values and minimum criteria for subsequent years may be revised upon the discretion of the University.

New Freshmen

Fall 2024 & Spring 2025 Entering Classes

Entering first-time freshmen who are accepted to Winthrop University will be considered for a merit scholarship. Scholarships are awarded by the Office of Admissions. No separate scholarship application is required. Contact the Office of Admissions with questions regarding scholarship eligibility.

Eligibility for scholarships:

  • A completed admission application must be received by the Office of Admissions by February 1, 2024 for scholarship consideration. A completed application includes: application form, application fee, and official high school transcript. Students submitting applications and scores after February 1st will be considered for scholarships if funds are available.
  • Students will be awarded a scholarship based upon the credentials received by the Office of Admissions as of February 1, 2024. Scholarship upgrades will not be automatically awarded to students if new test scores are received after February 1, 2024; however, they may be considered if scholarship funding remains.
  • Be admitted by Winthrop University and be classified as an entering first-time freshman.
  • Be enrolled at Winthrop University full-time (12 or more credit hours) each semester.
  • Winthrop reserves the right to cancel Winthrop awards if tuition is covered by another source.
  • Scholarships are renewable for up to three (3) additional years of undergraduate study as long as student maintains financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and has not earned his/her undergraduate degree.
  • Financial aid received from all sources cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance at Winthrop University.  The Office of Financial Aid reserves the right to adjust the value of scholarships as deemed necessary to comply with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

Scholarship Notification

Students who submit their completed admission application by Winthrop deadlines (see above) and are admitted to Winthrop University, will be notified about their scholarship eligibility on an ongoing basis beginning mid-December 2023.

Students selected for a scholarship will be awarded ONE of the scholarships listed below. Students will be evaluated on high school GPA or high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores for scholarship eligibility (whichever is more advantageous for student).

Winthrop Premier Scholarship

Annual Value:       $  7,000
Four-year Value:  $28,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 5.10 OR average SC GPA1 of 5.09 AND SAT score2 of 1330 or ACT score of 29.

Winthrop Gold Scholarship

Annual Value:       $  6,000
Four-year Value:  $24,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.97 OR average SC GPA1 of 4.81 AND SAT score2 of 1210 or ACT score of 25.

Winthrop Garnet Scholarship

Annual Value:       $  4,500
Four-year Value:  $18,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.72 OR average SC GPA1 of 4.49 AND SAT score2 of 1100 or ACT score of 22.

Winthrop Blue Line Scholarship

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.50 OR average SC GPA1 of 4.07 AND SAT score2 of 1050 or ACT score of 20.

Winthrop Eagle Promise Scholarship

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.15 OR average SC GPA1 of 3.73 AND SAT score2 of 970 or ACT score of 18.

Palmetto Boys and Girls State Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in addition to one of the Winthrop scholarships listed above. Awarded to students who completed the Palmetto Boys State or Palmetto Girls State program as a rising high school senior and who are listed as a participant by the program.


Scholarships for Out-of-State Freshmen

Students selected for a scholarship will be awarded ONE of the scholarships listed below. Students will be evaluated on high school GPA or high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores for scholarship eligibility (whichever is more advantageous for student).

Winthrop Premier Scholarship

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 4.0 OR average GPA2 of 3.87 AND SAT score3 of 1320 or ACT score of 29.

Winthrop Gold Scholarship

Annual Value:       $17,998 ($4,000 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $71,992

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.9 OR average GPA2 of 3.81 AND SAT score3 of 1190 or ACT score of 24.

Winthrop Garnet Scholarship

Annual Value:       $16,498 ($2,500 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $65,992

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.73 OR average GPA2 of 3.69 AND SAT score3 of 1100 or ACT score of 22.

Winthrop Blue Line Scholarship

Annual Value:       $15,498 ($1,500 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $61,992

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.52 OR average GPA2 of 3.29 AND SAT score3 of 1020 or ACT score of 20.

Winthrop Eagle Promise Scholarship

Annual Value:       $14,998 ($1,000 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $59,992

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.25 OR average GPA2 of 2.88 AND SAT score3 of 970 or ACT score of 18.

Transfer Students

Fall 2024 & Spring 2025 Entering Classes

Transfer students who are accepted to Winthrop University will be considered for a merit scholarship. No separate scholarship application is required.

Eligibility for scholarships:

  • A completed admission application must be received by the Office of Admissions by June 1, 2024 for priority scholarship consideration. Students who submit an admission application after June 1st will be considered for scholarships if funds are available. A completed application includes: application form, application fee, and official college transcripts mailed from all colleges/universities attended, even if credit was not earned or if credit is not desired. Additionally, an official high school transcript is required for transfer applicants who have not completed 30 semester or 45 quarter hours and before transfer students can be considered for the South Carolina LIFE Scholarship.
  • Be admitted to Winthrop University and classified as a new entering transfer student.
  • Complete at least 12 or more semester hours or 18 quarter hours (excluding remedial, developmental, and vocational courses) at prior institution(s) before beginning classes at Winthrop.
  • Have not previously-earned a bachelor's degree.
  • Is not classified as a readmitted student.
  • Meet the minimum criteria for the scholarship.
  • Final college transcripts must be received no later than two weeks after the first day of Winthrop fall classes for students who wish to qualify for a scholarship based on a final college transcript GPA.
  • Upon receipt of the final college transcript, the Office of Admissions reserves the right to reduce and/or remove a scholarship if the student no longer qualifies due to GPA or credit hours.
  • Be enrolled at Winthrop University full-time (12 or more credit hours) each semester.
  • Transfer students enrolled in the Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) will not be eligible for Transfer Scholarships.
  • Winthrop reserves the right to cancel Winthrop awards if tuition is covered by another source.
  • Scholarships are renewable for up to two (2) additional years of undergraduate study as long as student maintains financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and has not earned his/her undergraduate degree.

Continuing Students

Winthrop Scholarship - The 2024-2025 application deadline has passed. The 2025-2026 application will be available in March 2025.

Scholarship support is awarded to continuing Winthrop students on the basis of their academic achievement at the University and/or participation in extracurricular activities. High-achieving students, seeking their first undergraduate degree, who have a minimum 3.8 Winthrop cumulative GPA after the fall term are invited to submit an application for scholarships to the Office of Financial Aid in late March of each year. The Scholarship Committee will review the applications and make awards for the following academic year. For additional information, you may contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Children of Faculty and Staff Scholarship - The 2024-2025 application deadline has passed. The 2025-2026 application will be available in March 2025.

Scholarships funded by the generous contributions of Winthrop University faculty and staff are available to qualifying children of full-time faculty and staff members at Winthrop University. Applications are usually available in late March of each year. Students must be seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree and intend to enroll full-time in the fall term. Scholarship recipients will be chosen by Winthrop's Scholarship Committee and awarded by mid-June. For additional information, you may contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Scholarships by College or Department

NOTE: Some students receive scholarships and grants from sources other than Winthrop University. The Office of Financial Aid reserves the right to adjust the amount of Winthrop University scholarships for students whose total aid would exceed the estimated cost of attendance.
