Faculty, staff and students who conduct research using vertebrate animals on or off campus and/or in field studies must have IACUC approval for the project. To request review of your proposed research project by the IACUC, complete the Animal Study Protocol Review form (IACUC001) [Guidelines (PDF - 147 KB)] and other documents as related to your research. The signed and approved PDF of the protocol, including all attachments, must be submitted to Michele Smith, Grants and Sponsored Research Development, at least 30 days prior to the start of the research. Protocols are reviewed on an on-going basis and can be submitted at any time throughout the year. Additional forms that may need to be completed:
If you teach a class in which students use vertebrate animals for classroom exercises or for individual research projects, complete the Classroom Study Form (IACUC002) [Guidelines (PDF - 35 KB)]. This should only be used if you know the type of projects that will be conducted and the types of animals that will be used. The Classroom Study Form should be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the research, and can be submitted at any time throughout the year. The faculty member or class instructor will act as the principal investigator and will take responsibility to educate the students on appropriate animal use (see Animal Welfare Act and other guidelines.) The faculty member or class instructor will monitor the student projects for compliance. Students must complete a Student Research Project form (IACUC002S) [Guidelines (PDF - 33 KB)] that will be kept on file with the class materials and will be made available to the IACUC upon request.
A student conducting research that is not covered by an approved Classroom Study protocol must complete the Animal Study Protocol Review form (IACUC001) [Guidelines (PDF - 147 KB)] and receive IACUC approval before beginning the research.
All members of the research team, including the primary investigator, co-researchers, research assistants, and/or faculty advisors must complete CITI Lab Animal training before submitting a protocol for IACUC review.

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) encourages prompt reporting of any concerns, such as inappropriate care, misuse, or abuse of animals as related to research at Winthrop University. You may also send your concerns via e-mail to the IACUC recording secretary: Michele Smith.

Your report should be detailed and specific, including supporting documentation when possible, to allow for a thorough investigation by the IACUC.
