Winthrop's National Association of Black Journalists Chapter Named Best in the Nation

  • The National Association of Black Journalists noted Winthrop’s chapter “has established a strong presence on campus” and has been a highly visible “advocate for diversity and inclusion in media.”
  • Associate Professor of Mass Communication Nate Frederick serves as the group’s advisor.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) was recognized as the best in the nation. 

Winthrop’s chapter defeated four other finalists, including student chapters at Howard University, George Washington University and the University of North Texas. 

Brooke Frierson, Winthrop NABJ president and a mass communication major from Florence, South Carolina, said chapter members are grateful for the recognition. 

“We have worked so hard for this accomplishment and couldn't have done it without the support from our campus community and our partners in the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists (CAABJ),” she said. “We will continue to work hard and bring quality programming to campus. We are forever thankful."  

The National Association of Black Journalists noted Winthrop’s chapter “has established a strong presence on campus” and has been a highly visible “advocate for diversity and inclusion in media.” Other things members noted about Winthrop’s student chapter: 

*Programs the group has held, including a business etiquette dinner and a panel discussion, “Is It Because I’m Black?”

*How the group has strengthened its relationship with the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists. 

Associate Professor of Mass Communication Nate Frederick serves as the group’s advisor. He said he’s “beyond proud of their success.” 

“We were up against larger schools, but quality over quantity is important,” he said. “To me, the award is a testament to the work that all of the members have put in since the chapter’s inception. It’s one of the most active organizations on this campus, and the students are very dedicated to their development as future media professionals.”
