It’s Commencement time!

How are we already through the fall semester? It seems like we were just at Convocation starting this academic year! But here we are, and we’re about to hold my favorite event – Commencement! I hope you plan to join me on Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum to celebrate more than 300 graduates who have reached this fantastic milestone. I’m looking forward to congratulating each graduate, hearing Professor Jane Thomas’ Commencement address and awarding philanthropist John Winthrop with an honorary degree.

But before we get to Commencement and then depart for winter break, I’d like to touch on a few items of interest...

Holiday Drop-In Reminder

Please join Lauren and I today from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for a drop-in holiday reception at the President’s House. Come and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and conversation as we embrace the holiday season. We hope to see you today!

Facilities Updates

Each week, James Grigg updates me on the status of several facilities projects. I’d like to pass along a few of those updates that you may be interested in, including:

-abatement is underway in Byrnes Auditorium.

-abatement is nearly completed in Richardson residence hall; abatement is still ongoing in Wofford residence hall; demolition drawings are about to go to the state engineer.

-West Center roof replacement is continuing; rainfall before Thanksgiving revealed some areas that needed additional attention.

-McLaurin bathroom renovation and flood repair is continuing.

-Tillman Hall’s third floor fan coil replacement is underway.

-Work for renovation of Sims Science Building and Dalton Hall is being advertised.

-Roof replacement plans for Lee Wicker, McBryde and Joynes will be submitted for review and advertised soon.

Finally, my holiday wishes are that we all enjoy a peaceful and restful winter break and greet the New Year in good health and spirits, ready to take on the spring semester.
