Special Interest in Material Science

This two-week summer workshop course covers selected topics from the physics and chemistry content areas of the South Carolina Academic Standards for High School Science. Modern materials, including polymers, ceramics, metals and composites applied to electronic, optical and magnetic properties are provided as application. Delivery of the material includes traditional lectures as well as the following innovative approaches in science teaching: flipped learning, hands-on experiments, group activities, computer-based data collection, computer modeling, group discussions and presentations.

Benefits for participating teachers:

• Three Winthrop University graduate credits (PHYS 610) towards professional development;
• One set of the following equipment for the home-school: Pasco’s Air link interface and sensors (motion, pressure, temperature, pH, and voltage), and B+K Precision digital multimeter;
• The opportunity to experience hands-on experiments in chemistry and physics for classroom incorporation, enabling greater potential for student interest and training of the SC workforce in the STEM subdisciplines connected to materials science.
