The Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing will allow students the opportunity to gain professional skills in producing original creative works suitable for professional publication. Through skill-based learning and intensive workshops, the curriculum grants students extensive experience and knowledge in drafting original literary content with a high level of craft, editing their own writing and others’ written works, in-depth revision processes, and publication strategies. Students have the option to specialize in a single genre (i.e. fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction) or follow a multi-genre approach.

Application requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing program include:
Complete the online Graduate Studies application with the non-refundable application fee.
Applicants for admission must have completed a baccalaureate degree with an overall GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale or be enrolled as a current Winthrop University graduate student in good standing.
Request official transcript(s) from all institutions attended for undergraduate and graduate coursework. Transcripts must be sent directly to Winthrop's Graduate Studies office from the issuing institution(s).
Personal statement (400-600 words) and address the following prompt:
Describe your writing interests and goals.
Please draw on experiences and other pertinent background that show us what sets you apart from other candidates and help us understand your interest in the writing certificate program.
A minimum of 12 semester hours of WRIT courses must be taken in residence at Winthrop University. Students who completed their baccalaureate degree at Winthrop and took 3 or more of the required 500-level courses will not be eligible to pursue this certificate.
