New Student Checklist

Welcome to Winthrop and congratulations on your admission! Use the checklist below to complete important items before starting classes. Also review the links on the student resources page, and by all means let us know if we can help make your transition into graduate school a smooth one: gradstudies@winthrop.edu or 803/323-2204.

  1. Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
  2. Make note of your campus-wide student ID number (CWID); you will need this for just about everything! Your CWID was included in your admission e-mail.
  3. Create your Winthrop e-mail account - this will be our primary form of communication with you.
  4. Complete and submit your immunization requirements before your first day of classes. Questions? Contact Center for Student Wellness at 803/323-2206.
Note: A non-refundable $100.00 fee will be charged to your student account if you do not submit all required immunization materials by the first day of class
  5. Register for classes on Wingspan after you've received advising. Review the registration procedures for details. Non-degree seeking students are not required to receive advising.
  6. Obtain your student ID card.
Note: a student ID card is required to obtain access to the library, the West Center, and several other campus areas.
  7. Sign up for WU alert - our emergency notification system.
  8. Request a parking permit online. (Not required for online students unless you plan to come to campus.) Questions? Contact the Winthrop University Police Department.
  9. Pay your account balance online via Wingspan, or in person at the Cashier's office in room 22 Tillman Hall; view the available payment options. Make sure you either pay in full, OR set up a payment plan and make the first payment before the fee payment deadline; otherwise, your course schedule will be dropped and you will incur a late payment fee of $150.  If your balance is $0 due to financial assistance, then your schedule will be automatically protected from dropping.
  10. Protect your class schedule. Students can confirm that their schedule is protected from dropping by logging into Wingspan, clicking on the Student tab and then the Registration link.
  11. Review the student conduct code (pdf) and student handbook (pdf).

You will also want to get your textbooks, and explore campus.

Verifying Legal Presence

The State of South Carolina requires that legal presence in the United States be verified for all students before enrollment in a public college or university. For most students, legal presence will be verified through a process that has been adopted by the University. If Winthrop University is unable to verify your legal presence in the U.S., then you will be contacted by Records and Registration and asked to provide documentation.  If you are contacted, you must respond immediately with the requested information. Complete information about this can be found on the Records and Registration website.
