This program is for candidates who hold a master's degree in counseling and wish to pursue certification as a school counselor. Upon completion of the program you will be recommended for a school counseling certification in both South Carolina and North Carolina. Earn your certificate from a program that exceeds rigorous CACREP accreditation standards.

Requirements for program completion include:
CSDV 613 Foundations and Ethical Issues in School Counseling (Offered Online Summer/Spring)
CSDV 615S School Counseling Program Planning, Consultation & Supervision (Offered Online Summer/Fall)
CSDV 611 School Counseling Internship I (Offered Online Fall/Spring)
CSDV 612 School Counseling Internship II (Offered Online Fall/Spring)
Passing score on the PRAXIS Subject Assessment test for School Counselor
Additionally, the following 3-9 credit hours will be required only if they were not previously completed during your master's degree program:
CSDV 622 Counseling Children and Adolescents
CSDV 608 Loss, Grief and Crisis Counseling
CSDV 623 Advanced Counseling Interventions
Post-Graduate Certificate in School Counseling: No deadline, rolling admission
This program is for candidates who hold a master's degree in Community, Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Related Fields and wish to pursue certification as a school counselor.
Upon completion of the program, students will be recommended for a school counseling license in both South Carolina and North Carolina.
Application requirements include:
The online Graduate Studies application with the non-refundable application fee.
Must have graduated from a CACREP accredited program or one that follows the CACREP curriculum within the last 10 years
Submit transcript for review by the Winthrop Counseling Program faculty
Participate in an interview with the counseling faculty
Submit a 10-15 minute video role-play counseling session in which you demonstrate
basic helping skills as well as clinical counseling abilities

Professional Licensure Disclosure
Requirements for professional licensure in counseling vary from state to state. Winthrop’s
School Counseling program is designed to meet SC and NC licensure requirements for
school counseling and may not meet requirements from other states. We are unable to
make a determination about whether or not our program will lead to licensure in other
states. Before beginning any academic program that leads to licensure, we strongly
recommend you contact the state licensing board where you wish to seek licensure to determine whether the program you are considering
will meet that state's licensing requirements.
