Summer is here, and we are excited for several upcoming events!
I hope you are planning to join us on Thursday, June 27, as we dedicate both the new
fountain and the Morgan-Holcombe Alumni Center at the Stewart House for A Day of Dedications. The fountain dedication will take place at 2 p.m. in Tillman Hall Auditorium before
heading out to the fountain for a champagne toast. The Morgan-Holcombe Alumni Center
at the Stewart House dedication will be held at 3:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony
to officially dedicate the center’s new location.
We are very grateful to our generous fountain donors and Betty Morgan-Holcombe ’56
for making these projects a reality. Please RSVP by Friday, June 14. If you are not able to join us in person, tune in to the fountain
dedication and ribbon cutting at the Morgan-Holcombe Alumni Center live feed via the Alumni Association's Facebook page.
We also are very excited to welcome our newest Eagles to Winthrop! The Alumni Association
welcomes new students with the Photo Booth for Legacy Students at Summer Orientation
and Summer Send-Off events.
If your child, grandchild or sibling is an incoming Winthrop student, they are a Winthrop
Legacy! The Alumni Association hosts the Photo Booth for Legacy Students at Summer Orientation for legacy students and their families in the Bookstore Commons, located in the Winthrop
Bookstore. If you are an incoming legacy family, join us from 8-9:30 a.m. on June
17 and June 20. Legacy students receive exclusive legacy swag and families have the
opportunity to snap photos together. For questions about the Legacy Program, contact Brittany Neely ’14, alumni engagement coordinator, at neelyb@winthrop.edu.
Finally, alumni in Charleston and the Upstate, please join us for the upcoming Summer
Send-Off events to welcome the newest Eagles to the Winthrop family! Admitted students
and their families will have the opportunity to meet each other, staff from Winthrop Student Affairs will be in attendance to answer questions, alumni can share their Winthrop experiences
and our newest Eagles will officially be welcomed to Winthrop. Food and beverages
will be provided by the Winthrop Alumni Association. All alumni in these areas are

Virtual Alumni Book Club: "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver, is the story of a boy born to a teenage single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Freshman Orientation is an exciting time for student. It is especially exciting for
our legacy students. The Winthrop Legacy Program honors students who choose to continue the Winthrop legacy in their family. The Winthrop Alumni Association recognizes a legacy student as a child, grandchild or sibling of a Winthrop alumnus/a
who is seeking an undergraduate degree at Winthrop.
The Alumni Association will greet legacy students and their families as they attend
a summer Orientation session. We will have a photo booth set up from 8-9:15 a.m. on June 11, June 17 and
June 20 just for legacy students and their families in the Bookstore Commons, located
in the Winthrop Bookstore inside the DiGiorgio Campus Center and exclusive legacy swag. Be sure to register for summer Orientation before the sessions fill up. Contact Brittany Neely, alumni
