Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver, is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Join us on Thursday, June 27, as we dedicate both the new fountain and the Morgan-Holcombe Alumni Center at the Stewart House for A Day of Dedications. The fountain dedication will take place at 2 p.m. in Tillman Hall Auditorium before heading out to the fountain for a champagne toast. The Morgan-Holcombe Alumni Center at the Stewart House dedication will be held at 3:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially dedicate the Morgan-Holcombe Alumni Center’s new location. We are very grateful to our generous fountain donors and Betty Morgan-Holcombe ’56 for making these projects a reality.
