Graduate Admission/Readmission

Winthrop University admits qualified applicants and offers equal educational opportunities regardless of race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, or disability.

All newly admitted students attending on-campus classes must meet the mandatory immunization requirements prior to registration. All readmitted students must check with Health Services (803/323-2206) to update their immunizations prior to registration.

Students who missed a fall or spring semester as a regular graduate student must be re-admitted prior to registering for courses. Students in continuous enrollment require no admission action for the following semester.

Course Load

A graduate student who is registered for and attending nine or more semester hours of graduate work in a regular semester is classified as full time; a normal course load is 9 to 12 semester hours of graduate work. A graduate student may register for more than 12 semester hours of graduate course work in a semester or summer term only with the approval of the student's dean (except for MSW and MFA students). The recommended maximum course load for a student holding a full graduate assistantship is nine semester hours.

A graduate student may not enroll for more than one graduate level course in Maymester (a short term held in May prior to the regular summer session), or for more than 7 semester hours of graduate work in a 5 or 6 week term (or the two terms concurrently), or for more than 12 semester hours of graduate work during the 10 week term of the summer session without the approval of the student's dean (except for MSW and MFA students). An overload form may be obtained from Graduate Studies.

Graduate Registration Procedures

Academic Advising

Before registering, each degree-seeking student must be advised.

It is the responsibility of all students, both full time and part time, to schedule an advising appointment before the time they plan to register. Students planning to register during Early Registration should make an appointment for advisement during the designated advising period. Graduate advisement may continue through the semester; however, early advisement is recommended.

Transient students and non-degree students may contact the Office of Records and Registration for registration information. Prior to registration, all students must provide Health Services with verification of the required immunizations. This is a mandatory requirement.

How to Register

  • Schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor. If you do not know who your advisor is, contact Graduate Studies. With your advisor's assistance, plan your schedule for the semester.
  • View Registration dates
  • You may register using Wingspan. For instructions, click here.
  • Pay all fees in the Cashier's Office by the fee payment deadline.

Students who have no balance due, through financial assistance, scholarship, etc., will have their course schedule automatically protected if they meet certain criteria. More information about satisfactory payment arrangements can be found via the fee payment deadline website.
