Technology Projects

To better serve our community, the Computing & Information Technology department regularly takes on upgrade and renovation projects across campus. These projects help keep Winthrop secure and improve resources available to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. This page will be updated regularly as we make progress on these projects. 

 

Current Projects

Campus Security Camera Upgrade
Start Date: Oct. 2021 Expected Completion Date: June 2023 Areas Affected: Entire campus
Overview: Throughout 2022-2023, security cameras across campus will be upgraded to increase campus safety.

Updates:

  • Dec. 2021: Equipment purchased for Roddey and Margaret Nance
  • Feb. 2022: Equipment purchased for Courtyard, Phelps, Thomson, Richardson, and Lee Wicker
  • Feb. 2022: Margaret Nance and Courtyard upgrades are complete. Roddey is 95% complete
  • Mar. 2022: Phelps, Thomson, Richardson, and Lee Wicker are 95% complete
  • Oct. 2022: Lee Wicker & Roddey complete
  • Nov. 2022: Started Phase II. Academic buildings
Residence Hall WiFi Upgrade
Start Date: July 2021 Expected Completion Date: Ongoing Areas Affected: Courtyard, Lee Wicker, Margaret Nance, Phelps, Roddey, Thomson
Overview: Throughout 2022, WiFi equipment will be upgraded in residence halls to ensure reliable Internet access for students living on campus. 

Updates: 

  • Sept. 2021: Phelps WiFi upgrade completed
  • Nov. 2021: Vendor selected to perform work
  • Mar. 2022: Courtyard equipment order placed
  • June 2022: Rewiring of Lee Wicker started
  • Oct. 2022: Courtyard upgrade completed
Academic Building WiFi Upgrade
Start Date: Nov. 2021 Expected Completion Date: Ongoing Areas Affected: Bancroft, Conservatory of Music, Dalton, Johnson, Kinard, McLaurin, Rutledge, Sims, Thurmond, West Center, Withers
Overview: Throughout 2022, WiFi equipment will be upgraded in academic buildings to ensure reliable Internet access in learning environments and offices for faculty and staff.

Updates: 

  • Nov. 2021: Surveyed need in Rutledge
  • Feb. 2022: Project scope for Rutledge completed
  • Apr. 2022: Wiring contractors selected. Work will start on May 16
  • Oct. 2022: Surveyed need in Kinard
Emergency Phone Upgrade Assessment
Start Date: Dec. 2021 Expected Completion Date: Ongoing Areas Affected: Entire campus
Overview: Emergency phones (or "Blue Boxes") in outdoor locations across campus will be surveyed and options for upgrading or replacing as needed will be assessed to ensure reliable and easily accessible communication in emergency situations. 

Updates: 

  • Dec. 2021: Entered survey and needs assessment phase of project
  • Apr. 2022: Branding design approved and equipment order placed
  • Oct. 2022: Started installation around Courtyard
Classroom Technology Update
Start Date: Sept. 2021 Expected Completion Date: Fall 2022 Areas Affected: Bancroft, Conservatory of Music, Dalton, Johnson, Kinard, McLaurin, Rutledge, Sims, Thurmond, West Center, Withers
Overview: Technology in classrooms such as projectors, audio/visual equipment, and computers will be upgraded to better meet the instructional needs of faculty and students.

Updates: 

  • Sept. 2021: Began selecting new equipment for Kinard 101 and 102 as possible program pilots 
  • Feb. 2022: Selected Kinard 102 as program pilot and ordered equipment for upgrade
  • June 2022: Started equipment installation in Kinard 102
  • Oct. 2022: Completed equipment installation in Kinard 102
