Off-Campus Opportunities

We strive to provide every opportunity for our students to achieve more than they ever thought they could. Below are some opportunities we how that students check out and apply to.

The Institute for NanoBioTechnology at Johns Hopkins University offers undergraduate students from colleges and universities around the country a chance to participate in research projects in the exciting and rapidly growing area of nanobiotechnology, a place where biology, medicine, and nanotech meet. The summer 2023 application cycle is now closed. The summer 2024 application cycle will open November 1, 2023.

The Journal of Student Research accepts submissions from undergraduate and graduate students in all fields. Deadline: 11:59 p.m. August 31, 2023.

The Marine and Coastal Ecology Research Center (MCERC) is offering research assistantships to participate in data collection and analysis and mentoring interns for various programs and projects including sea turtle and humpback whale research in the Caribbean. Interested applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marine biology or a related field and follow the detailed instructions for applying following the announcements. Experience is not a requirement for these positions but previous participation in a related MCERC program is a plus.

The National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) focus is the modeling and simulation of biological networks, ranging from intracellular biochemical networks to networks at the organism level and the population level. Their website allows for students to search for specific areas they want to conduct research in and apply.

Any member of the SCAS is eligible to present a paper at the meeting or attend the meeting. In the past faculty, undergraduate and graduate students have presented papers and/or posters. The SCAS mission is to promote the creation and dissemination of scientific knowledge within the state of South Carolina by stimulating scientific research and publication. It is a wonderful opportunity to network with colleagues in your discipline.

During the Environmental Microbiology REU at UNLV, students will collaborate with faculty mentors in developing and carrying out hypothesis-based projects on microorganisms from diverse habitats such as hot springs, the deep terrestrial subsurface, hypersaline lakes, arid soils, and ephemeral water sources. Students may also choose to explore the mechanisms of magnetotaxis, sporulation, soil-forming processes, microbial adaptation to stressful and non-host environments, or the dynamics between primary producers and consumers. Undergraduates from institutions where research opportunities in STEM disciplines are limited, including two-year colleges are strongly encouraged to apply. Students receive a stipend, travel subsidy, and housing in a UNLV dormitory. If you have questions, e-mail moereu@unlv.edu for more information.

The School of Veterinary Medicine provides an outstanding environment for the training of future veterinary scientists through our combined VMD-PhD program. It's an excellent way for you to continue your education while impacting the future of medicine for humans and all species. Who knows what today's research could do for future generations?

The SULI program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science's, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories. Applications for the SULI program are solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internship appointments are 10 weeks in duration for the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks in duration for the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms. Each DOE laboratory offers different research opportunities; not all DOE laboratories offer internships during the Fall and Spring Terms. The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program is now closed for applications for the 2023 Fall Term.

The EPA is offering opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. These experiences are in hopes to provide insight into careers that improve the health and well-being of people and ensuring that people have clean air, pure water, and better-protected land.
