Previous West Forum Events

November 18, 2021 - Dr. Gibbs Knotts from the College of Charleston and Dr. Chris Cooper from Western Carolina University spoke on topics related to their book, “The Resilience of Southern Identity.” Many changes have taken place in the South over the past half century, causing some to argue that southern identity is fading. This book explores how these changes have allowed for new kinds of southern identity to emerge. This free 5 p.m. in-person event in Dina's Place was a cultural event.

September 28, 2021 - Candace Carroll and Frank Knaack discussed facial recognition technology and how it ties into Constitutional rights. This 11 a.m. event was delivered via Zoom and was a cultural event.

September 11, 2021 - "20 Years Since September 11, 2021," reflected on the 20-year anniversary of 9/11, remembered the lives lost, and analyzed events that happened before and since. This free Zoom event was a cultural event.

 

News Literacy and the Future of Journalism Series

The "News Literacy and Future of Journalism" series was a seven-month collaborative effort among SC Humanities, Winthrop University, and the SC Press Association. Additional support came from the North Carolina Humanities Council, The Newseum in Washington, D.C., The John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy, the Departments of Mass Communication and Political Science, and the College of Arts & Sciences at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.


"News Literacy and the Future of Journalism" was part of the national initiative on "Democracy and the Informed Citizen" administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and funded by the Mellon Foundation. The initiative seeks to deepen the public's knowledge and appreciation of the vital connections between democracy, the humanities, journalism, and an informed citizenry.


The series included 11 events. All were free, open to the public, publicized aggressively, and available for view on the Newseum website. Unless otherwise noted, they were held on the Winthrop campus. To see the list of events, please check out the calendar linked here.
