Winthrop University offers both undergraduate and graduate options for pursuing initial certification
in mathematics or science. The WISE program has offered support for students pursuing
either option for certification in mathematics or science since 2011. Further, the
program sponsors an intensive Summer Internship to encourage STEM students to consider
teacher and the role of schooling in our society.
WISE Program Outcomes:
• Recruit qualified and diverse participants for WISE internship and Scholars program;
• Support high-quality preparation programs for STEM Educators through multiple and
varied paths for certification (undergraduate, graduate, transfer, and career-changers);
and
• Support and retain Scholars as teachers in high-need districts and schools;
WISE Projects:
• Provide summer internships for first and second year STEM majors at Winthrop and
York Technical College that expose them to research and education in their content
area;
• Provide scholarship to undergraduates or graduate students enrolled in Winthrop's
mathematics or science education programs;
• Provide these scholars with additional mentoring, professional development opportunities,
and access to needed materials; and
• Create a network of STEM students that teach and positively impact STEM education.
The WISE program is currently seeking a new round of funding and was last funded by the NSF 15-530, Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program under award #1540690
