Educational Studies Minor

 

Program Coordinator: Ms. Joanna Harris

Students declaring the Educational Studies minor will be assigned to Ms. Joanna Harris for advising, and students will continue to work with their content program coordinator already assigned for advising in the major.


Program Purpose:

Undergraduate students interested in pursuing the MAT Accelerated option upon completion of their bachelor's degree must declare the Educational Studies minor as soon as possible.

Program Admissions:

The Educational Studies minor requires students to apply for admission to teacher education. Educational Studies minors will apply to Teacher Education once they have completed either EDCO 201/202. Admissions requirements include:

 

  • At least a 2.75 GPA 
  • Passing score on the Praxis Core or an appropriate SAT or ACT score. 


The Graduate Studies Application for MAT is due by February 15th for a June start. Admission requirements include:

  • Praxis Subject Area Exam Scores must be at an acceptable level and available at Winthrop before February 15th. 


The following MAT Accelerated admission requirements are in place:

  • Summer 2019 MAT Accelerated: Admission requirements include the Educational Studies Minor.

 

Program Courses:

Required courses are listed below (15 credit-hour minimum). Information regarding required courses, the sequence of offerings, and important program milestones are contained in the following table. 

  • EDCO 101 (1 credit)
  • EDCO 200 (3 credits)
  • EDCO 201/202 (4 credits)
  • Discipline-Specific Methods Course: See catalog (1-3 credits)
  • READ 345 or 346 (3 credits)
  • Electives: See catalog (if needed)

Students who want to add the Middle Level to Secondary Certification must complete the following courses. Students may be able to take one or both of these at the graduate level as an elective in the MAT Accelerated Program:

  • MLED 300 (fall only) 
  • MLED 310 (spring only) requires admission to Teacher Education Program

Students who want to add the Gifted and Talented Endorsement must complete the following courses. Students may be able to take one or both of these at the graduate level as an elective in the MAT Accelerated Program:

  • EDUC 594
  • EDUC 595
