The Richard W. Riley College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences provides professional programs grounded in experiential experiences and opportunities. With a dedication to ensuring our programs prepare graduates for contemporary challenges and opportunities, the programs in education, health, human sciences, and sport stay connected through professional partnerships that inform curricula, experiences, and direction.
The college offers programs in athletic training, exercise science, human development and family studies, learning design and technology, mental health counseling, sport and fitness administration, and sport management. Our students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, local resources, and community partners. The college also has a rich history in preparing educators. With a thriving Winthrop University-School Partnership, the programs are able to prepare professionals to work in the current school environment. The college offers teacher preparation programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Certification options within the college include early childhood, elementary, middle level, physical education, and special education. Individuals interested in teaching biology, chemistry, dance, English, French, mathematics, music, Spanish, social studies, theatre, and visual art are served by both the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences and either the College of Arts and Sciences or College of Visual and Performing Arts. At the graduate level, the college serves professionals with programs that include educational leadership, school counseling, and special education intervention. Finally, the college is dedicated to supporting teacher development and student learning by offering professional development and endorsement areas. The college partners with a variety of community organizations and serves as the on campus home for a number of exciting opportunities for students. The WinthropLIFE welcomes students with intellectual disabilities to the postsecondary setting. Macfeat Early Childhood Laboratory School serves as a hub for early childhood educational experiences for preschool, kindergarten, and college students. The Instructional Technology Center supports the use of technology as an innovative tool to facilitate exploration and learning. Focused on developing teams and groups through specialized learning in non-traditional settings, the Outdoor Education Center welcomes a variety of groups to engage. As the center of partnerships, development, and exploration in the college, The James and Susan Rex Institute for Educational Renewal and Partnerships serves, facilitates, and supports individuals and initiatives that involve collaboration, partnership, and outreach. The college also welcomes a new cohort of students to the Teaching Fellows and Call Me MISTER programs each fall.
