Exercise Science

The Career Possibilities are Tremendous!

Exercise Science is a popular major in that it offers many possibilities for career paths where there are increasing demands for qualified health professionals.

An exercise science major can pursue graduate programs in allied health such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or physician assistant or accelerated programs in nursing. Another emerging area is public health and community and corporate health promotion. Some majors aim to work with high-performance athletes in exercise physiology or sport-specific strength and conditioning.Active senior adult residential communities hire exercise science grads to work on their campuses with their residents. Exercise scientists are qualified to work with clinical populations such as persons who are enrolled in or who have completed cardiac, cancer, or other type of outpatient therapy. Graduate studies in exercise physiology can further increase career opportunities in teaching and research. There is literally something for everyone interested in exercise science!

Exercise Science

I am honored to say that I had a very memorable experience at Winthrop University due to faculty and staff from the College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences. In my freshman year, I had a goal but I needed assistance on achieving that goal. The recognition and guidance from the Exercise Science department, Program for Research Incentives in Science and Math (PRISM), Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Program, and the military has helped mold me into the person I am today. These experiences have left a lasting impression in my life because I have grown and matured during my undergraduate years. Two of my most memorable moments at Winthrop University was receiving the Hellams Award through my Exercise Science department and having the opportunity to conduct research with my mentor Dr. Wojcik through the McNair Scholars Program. These two highlights gave me more confidence in my capabilities and motivated me to perform to the best of my abilities. Being an Exercise Science major has taught me to live a healthier lifestyle through eating smart and exercising because as college students we accumulate all this knowledge but we need to take care of our bodies to be able to have a vessel to use that knowledge. I have truly appreciated my experiences at Winthrop University as an Exercise Science major and would not change it for the world.
