The Eagle STEM Scholars Program was formed as a result of the INBRE II diversity initiative to effectively matriculate more students from diverse groups into biomedical science PhD programs. Winthrop, because of its diverse population of students, is uniquely poised to increase the number of under-represented minority, financial need and first generation undergraduates in South Carolina who matriculate into Ph.D. biomedical science, bioengineering, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, and math. It is taking steps to move over the next two decades towards national leadership in this area.

Eagle STEM Scholars will become a part of a close-knit campus community of like-minded learners. They will share common campus experiences that foster unity and academic achievement.

The Winthrop Eagle STEM Scholars Program is seeking motivated, goal-oriented, high-caliber students who demonstrate excellent proficiency in science and mathematics. This student-centered program provides individual and peer support, resources for academic success, and an unmatched level of access to scientific research.

Students graduating as Eagle STEM scholars will transition successfully into graduate programs, and eventually into health-related research careers. Recipients of the Eagle STEM scholarship will pursue any of the follow areas of study:
