Choosing a Service for Mailing

First-Class Mail

First-Class Mail includes postcards and letters. Large envelopes and packages containing qualified pieces can be sent using First-Class Mail. First-Class Mail service is typically used for personal and business correspondence, and bills.

Library Mail

Library Mail is mail that must meet the standards for package service. Library Mail rates are based on the weight of each addressed piece without regard to zone. Each piece of Library Mail must show, in the address or the return address, the name of the following:

  • Fraternal organization or association
  • Philanthropic (charitable) organization
  • Public library
  • School, college, or university

Media Mail

Small and large packages, including thick envelopes and tubes, can be sent using Media Mail. Contents are limited to books, film, manuscripts, sound recordings, video tapes, and computer media (CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Sometimes called "Book Rate", Media Mail cannot contain advertising. Media Mail is less expensive than Parcel Post.

Parcel Post

Small and large packages, thick envelopes and tubes containing gifts, and merchandise can be sent using Parcel Post. In some cases, this is a less expensive way to send your article, but it does not receive the service provided by First-Class Mail.

Priority Mail

Large or thick envelopes, including tubes and packages, containing mailable items can be sent using Priority Mail. This service is typically used to send documents, gifts, and merchandise. Free Priority Mail envelopes, boxes, and tubes including "Flat Rate" boxes, which allow you to send as much weight as you can fit in the box for one flat rate, are available at the University Post Office. If shipping material is not in stock, it must be ordered. There is a 10 day shipping time requested by the USPS.
