The Biology Department is fortunate to have two funds available to support Winthrop University student research. The Luckett Davis Biology Endowment was established "to provide support of undergraduate and graduate research, travel, etc." and the Jim and Karen Johnston Endowment was established to "provide support to Biology students, either graduate or undergraduate, who are conducting academic research." Undergraduate and graduate students can apply for this Award to support their biological research endeavors. Further details and application guidelines can be found here:
Undergraduate students can gain hands-on research experience working alongside Biology Department faculty during paid summer research internships that are funded by the SC INBRE III grant.
The Biology Department recognizes the best independent undergraduate research projects with the Janice Chastain Houk Prize. The award was created in 2007 by her husband, Dr. Richard Houk, Emeritus Professor of Biology, and their sons to honor her life and memory. The department awards cash prizes each year to the top two students who present the best research projects presented at the department's poster symposium (1st and 2nd places) that occurs at the end of the spring semester. The competition is open to any undergraduate Biology Major who completes a biology based research project at Winthrop beyond what is done in BIOL 300.
