The Department of Chemistry, Physics, Geology & the Environment is housed within the College of Arts & Sciences and located in the Sims Science Building. Winthrop Chemistry professor Cliff Calloway and his students used HPLC analysis to verify that "Pepper X" is now the hottest chili pepper in the world. The new variety, developed by Ed Currie of Puckerbutt Peppers, scored over 2.6 million Scoville heat units making it roughly 3 times hotter than the Carolina Reaper pepper, the previous record holder. The pepper was recently featured in an episode of the popular "Hot Ones" YouTube show.
