Welcome to the Environmental Programs at Winthrop University!


Students collecting data on the beachThrough our collaborative and interdisciplinary program students explore the dynamic natural systems that shape our earth and their diverse intersections with human societies in the Carolinas and globally. Together, faculty and students examine issues central to the health and sustainability of our planet and seek out innovative solutions to the environmental challenges we face.

In the Environmental Programs, you can pursue a B.S. in Environmental Science or a B.A. in Environmental Studies.


Our Majors

We offer two majors: a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. Both majors prepare students for a wide range of environmentally-focused careers and graduate study.

    The B.S. in Environmental Science is designed for students interested in the scientific and technical aspects of environmental issues. Environmental Science majors are broadly trained in a variety of scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. Our graduates find jobs in environmental engineering firms, regional and state governmental agencies, and more. Some go on to polish their skills in graduate degree programs. Our program emphasizes experiential, hands-on learning including training in geographic information systems software, internships, and independent research which provide students with real-world career experience to prepare them for life after Winthrop.

    The B.S. degree in Environmental Sciences educates students in the scientific, social, political, ethical, and policy aspects of environmental issues in preparation for scientific careers in industry, government, and consulting and for graduate programs in environmental sciences.

    Students collect weather station data.The B.A. in Environmental Studies is designed for students who want to understand the interconnections between society and the environment. The Environmental Studies curriculum exposes students to both the scientific foundations of environmental processes and the dynamics of human society through an array of social science and humanities disciplines. This broad, interdisciplinary training prepares our graduates for careers in environmental education, compliance branches of city and state government, and environmental advocacy organizations. Our program emphasizes experiential, hands-on learning including training in geographic information systems software, internships, and independent research which provide students with real-world career experience to prepare them for life after Winthrop.

    The B.A. degree in Environmental Studies provides students with a broad introduction to the scientific, social, political, cultural, economic, and policy aspects of environmental issues. B.A. students will minor in a discipline that complements their major and will be prepared to pursue careers with environmental groups, policy groups, and consulting firms and to continue studies in graduate programs in environmental studies and law.
