Fellowships, Scholarships, and Awards

The Environmental Program offers a number of fellowships and scholarships for Environmental Science and Environmental Studies majors.


Dalton Undergraduate Scholarship

The Dalton Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship is made possible by the vision and generosity of Harry and Becca Dalton to support the students committed to investigation of environmental issues and the promotion of environmental responsibility and sustainability. This scholarship is designed for rising juniors or seniors who are environmental science or studies majors.

Award

  • Up to $3000, potentially divided among more than one recipient.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have completed at least 45 undergraduate hours at time of application.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 9 hours in their ENSC/ENST major (including ENVS101 and ENVS220) by the time the award begins.
  • Students are expected to graduate from Winthrop with an ENSC or ENST degree.

Criteria

  • Academic merit and/or financial need will be considered.

Margaret E. Spencer Summer Undergraduate Fellowship

The Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies program is pleased to announce the availability of the Margaret E. Spencer Undergraduate Fellowship. This award is designed for rising juniors or seniors to conduct substantive summer projects (research, service, internship, or similar) that will help them become experts in their subject areas or gain experience working in an environmental field. These awards are available only to both Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies majors, so long as they are conducting a project in conjunction with a faculty member on an environmentally-relevant topic. Applications are typically due in the Spring.

Award

  • Stipend of up to $3,000 for 8 weeks.
  • Up to $500 for project supplies.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be majoring in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies.

Lily Fuller Moredock Scholarship

The Lilly Fuller Moredock Scholarship can be used for scholarships and/or to fund student travel for study abroad, or to present research at conferences. This award may be split between multiple recipients and some may be set aside specifically to fund student travel. Approximately $3,000 is available to Environmental Science or Environmental Studies majors each year.

  • Applicants must have completed at least 45 undergraduate hours at time of application.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 9 hours in their ENSC/ENST major (including ENVS101 and ENVS220) by the time the award begins.
  • Applicants must be majoring in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies.

WEASC Legacy of Learning Scholarship: 

The Water Environment Association of South Carolina supports wastewater professionals in protecting and preserving the water environment of South Carolina. Preference is given to descendants of WEASC members.

Award: $2,000

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be pursing an ENSC or ENST degree
  • Applicants must be residents of South Carolina
  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least 5 hours with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
