The Department of Mathematics is committed to helping students at all levels develop an interest in and appreciation for mathematics and statistics. We offer three undergraduate programs: 1) BA in Mathematics, 2) BS in Mathematics, and 3) BA in Data Science — see our major page for more information. If you want to better underdstand how mathematics aligns with another discipline, we offer a minor in mathematics in addition to the BA options mentioned above. The Department prides itself on the individual attention it provides to students, including small class sizes, opportunities for research with faculty, and multiple degree pathways to ensure you are prepared for your postgraduate goals, whether they be teaching, graduate school, or working in the industry. Most undergraduate students will begin their mathematical journey by taking a course that meets the Quantitative Skills General Education requirement, such as:

An online Mathematics Placement Exam is available to all students (incoming, transfer, and current) to determine which course is best for each student. For information about the Mathematics Placement Exam, visit the Math Placement Exam webpage.
The Department of Mathematics operates the Mathematics Tutorial Center, or MTC, located in 271 Bancroft Hall where students enrolled in mathematics courses may obtain individual assistance. In addition, some courses use mathematical software which is available for students in BANC 173 and SIMS 114. The MTC is staffed by faculty and upper division mathematics majors and minors, requires no appointment, and is free to Winthrop students!!!
In addition to teaching, mathematics faculty participate in ongoing scholarly activity that includes searching for new mathematical results, placing modern mathematics in its cultural and educational context, producing pedagogical materials of high quality, working with area K-12 educators, and consulting with area businesses and organizations. The mathematics faculty also serves the Winthrop community by providing counsel on mathematical and statistical issues and serves the larger community through outreach programs for students of all ages, Math Teacher Circles, consulting for businesses, and participation in discipline-specific professional organizations.
