Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Physical Education, Sport and Human Performance!

The Department of Physical Education, Sport and Human Performance is comprised of four separate degree programs and two minors. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), and Sport Management. The Exercise Science, Teacher Certification, and Sport Management degree programs are housed in the Lois Rhame West Center. The Athletic Training program is jointly housed in the West Center and Winthrop Coliseum.

The Department has over 400 undergraduate and graduates students enrolled in five different programs. Departmental offices are in the state-of-the-arts Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education, and Wellness Center. The West Center is 137,000 square feet of academic and recreational green space. The building features fully equipped athletic training education and exercise science laboratories along with five wired classrooms, a computer room, four gymnasiums, two activity spaces, four racquetball courts, a competitive swimming pool, a climbing wall, weight room and cardio equipment throughout the building.

The department is comprised of 11 full-time faculty and several part-time faculty members. All full-time faculty have terminal degrees in their specialty areas along with numerous years of experience in athletic training, exercise science, sport management or teaching. Highly qualified faculty enable the department to offer initial and advanced study in sport and physical education. In addition, students can elect to complete a minor in either health or coaching through the PESH Department.

Student organizations provide opportunities for students to become involved in professional development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Clubs include: Athletic Training Club, Exercise Science Club, Physical Education Major's Club, Sport Management Club, and the Phi Epsilon Kappa Honor Society.
