Curriculum and Pedagogy

The Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy is a community of scholars who prepare teachers to meet the needs of diverse 21st century classrooms by promoting high academic standards, cultivating reflective thought, and focusing on engaged citizenship. The department houses programs for both initial licensure and advanced study. Curriculum and Pedagogy has over 400 students enrolled in its graduate and undergraduate degree programs.

 

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate programs offer field experiences beginning in the freshman year.  In addition, programs feature small classes and a curriculum that emphasizes content knowledge, pedagogy, assessment, use of technology, and development of leadership skills.  Clinical experiences in Macfeat Laboratory School provide links to current classroom practices for early childhood students. Study abroad opportunities are accessible for undergraduate students during designated semesters.

Student Organizations

Student organizations provide exciting opportunities for involvement in professional activities. Faculty sponsors work with students in several organizations: Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), National Alliance of Black Student Educators (NABSE), Palmetto Student Teachers Association (PSTA), and Student Chapter of the South Carolina Early Childhood Association (SCECA).

 

Program Faculty

The department is comprised of 12 full-time faculty and several part-time faculty members. Faculty are committed to research and scholarly endeavors that inform the profession and enhance public education inour society.  All full-time, tenure-track faculty members hold doctoral degrees in their fields of study, and most have numerous years of teaching and service in public schools. Highly qualified faculty enable the department to offer initial and advanced study in the areas of assessment, early childhood education, educational psychology, elementary education, literacy, and social foundations of education.
