Curriculum and Pedagogy

Literacy, Learning, Leaders for Tomorrow's Classroom

The Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy prepares teachers to meet the educational needs of diverse students in our ever-changing society through programs for initial licensure and advanced study. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education, and a Master of Education in Literacy

and Learning Design and Technology.

The department is comprised of 12 full-time faculty and several part-time faculty members. All full-time, tenure-track faculty members hold doctoral degrees in their fields of study, and most have numerous years of teaching and service in public schools. Highly qualified faculty enable the department to offer initial and advanced study in the areas of assessment, early childhood education, educational psychology, elementary education, literacy, and social foundations of education

Undergraduate programs offer field experiences beginning in the freshman year, and clinical experiences in Macfeat Laboratory School provide links to current classroom practices. In addition, programs feature small classes and a curriculum that emphasizes content knowledge, pedagogy, assessment, use of technology, and development of leadership skills. Faculty members seek opportunities to involve both graduate and undergraduate students in research projects and conference presentations.

Student organizations provide exciting opportunities for involvement in professional activities. Faculty sponsors work with students in several organizations: Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, National Alliance of Black Student Educators (NABSE), Palmetto Student Teachers Association (PSTA), and Student Chapter of the South Carolina Early Childhood Association (SCECA)
