Department News and Celebrations

  • Ten students from the Department of English were inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, a prestigious international English honor society. 

  • English major Paige Lillibridge received the College of Arts & Sciences Inez Bell Caskey Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research in the Humanities.

  • English Major Davyn Osborne received The Johnsonian Class of 1970 Scholarship.

  • Dr. Dustin M. Hoffman received the Department of English 2024 Scholarship Award.

  • Dr. Jo Koster received the Department of English 2024 Service Award.

  • Instructor Amanda Covington received the Department of English 2024 Teaching Award.

  • Six students from the Department of English presented at the 2024 SOURCE conference. 

  • Dr. Jo Koster, Dr. Mary Martin, Ms. Casey Smith, and Dr. Jane Smith read their poetry at the 2024 Writing our Lives: Women’s Poetry Reading Event.

  • Nine Winthrop English students read their poems, short stories, and creative non-fiction at the 2024 Department of English Creative Writing Student Showcase.

  • Winthrop English faculty members Ms. AJ Campbell, Ms. Amanda Covington, Dr. Matthew Fike, Dr. Amanda Hiner, and Ms. Faith Rush and Winthrop English graduate students Amber Nelson and Brianna Sharp presented papers at the 2024 College English Association Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • Twelve English majors presented at the 16th Annual English Department Research Conference, the largest group of presenters to date. 

  • In the Fall 2023 semester, 35 English majors were on the Dean's List or President's List. 

  • Dr. Amanda Hiner published an article titled “Teaching Anne Finch’s Satire in the British Literature Survey Classroom” in ABO: Interdisciplinary Journal for Women in the Arts 1650 – 1830.

  • Dr. Heather Listhartke gave a presentation titled “Making Community Methods: Crafting a Framework for Inclusive Community Building Practices in Composing Spaces” at the SIGDOC Conference.

  • Dr. Dustin M. Hoffman's third fiction collection, Such a Good Man, will be published by University of Wisconsin Press. 

  • The Department of English welcomed seven amazing English alumni back to campus for the English Alumni Panel. The panelists answered student-submitted questions and provided insights into the professionalization of the English major. 

  • The Departments of English, Fine Arts, and History hosted the Southeastern Medieval Association's 2023 Conference at Winthrop University. 

  • NCTE and the Literary Society hosted the 12th Annual Banned Book Event, which garnered a record-breaking turnout.

  • Dr. Leslie Bickford hosted a gallery talk with award-winning photographer Tema Stauffer as part of Stauffer's latest exhibition, Southern Fiction. 

  • The Department of English hosted a Back to School party for our 29 incoming English majors.

  • Dr. Dustin M. Hoffman's short story "Bicuspid" won the Ninth Letter 2023 Literary Award for fiction.

  • Dr. Amanda Hiner was interviewed about her book, British Woman Satirists in the Long Eighteenth Century, for Morgenbladet, the largest newspaper in Norway.

  • Ms. Evelyne Weeks, senior instructor of English, was awarded emeritus status. 

  • Dr. Ephraim Sommers was awarded tenure. 

  • Dr. Dustin M. Hoffman was promoted to Full Professor. 

  • 100% of English Secondary Education majors passed their edTPA exams.

  • The Department of English continues to have a 100% job placement rate for secondary education graduates.

  • Ms. Kara Beasley received the College of Education, Sport, and Human Sciences’s 2023 Distinguished University Supervisor Award.

  • Dr. Matthew Fike published “The Castaway Archetype in Two Tales of an Island Year” in the Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies.

  • Graduate students Stephanie Martin, Samantha Hyatt, Jordan Terry, and Sarah Costner passed their oral comprehensive exams.

  • Senior English Major Lucy Manley received the College of Arts & Sciences Inez Bell Caskey Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research in the Humanities.

  • Senior English Major Jada Strong received The Johnsonian Class of 1970 Scholarship.

  • Dr. Amanda Hiner received the College of Arts & Sciences 2023 Faculty Scholarship Excellence Award.

  • Dr. Jo Koster was nominated for the 2022-2023 College of Arts & Sciences Lynn Harand Outstanding Advisor Award.

  • Dr. Matthew Fike received the Department of English 2023 Scholarship Award.

  • Ms. Evelyne Weeks received the Department of English 2023 Service Award.

  • Mr. Bryan Ghent received the Department of English 2023 Teaching Award.

  • Students Samantha Hyatt, Amber Nelson, Sarah Costner, Jordan Terry, Gwen Pregnall, Lydia Coffey, Lucy Manley, and Courtney Hatcher presented papers at the Winthrop “Movement(s) in a Dynamic World: Interdisciplinary Perspectives” conference.

  • Dr. Dustin M. Hoffman was invited as a keynote speaker to read his fiction at the 16th Annual Clemson University Literary Festival.

  • Ms. Amanda Covington and Ms. AJ Campbell gave an invited presentation on establishing a research identity at the English Department’s 17th Annual Graduate Scholars’ Forum.

  • Senior Honors English Major Lucy Manley presented her research on mitigating re-segregation trends in public schools through the integration of critical thinking instruction in public school classrooms at the NCTE national convention in Anaheim, CA.

  • Graduate students Samantha Hyatt and Stephanie Martin presented papers at the 2023 Southeastern American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies Conference.

  • Dr. Kelly Richardson received the 2022 Kinard Award for Excellence in Teaching, Winthrop University's top teaching award

  • Winthrop English alum Rachel Reeher read selections from her forthcoming novel as an invited speaker at the Winthrop Fiction Writers Reading Series this fall

  • Winthrop English alum Jammie Huynh read published poetry as an invited speaker at this year’s Wever-Todd Writers Series event.

  • Dr. Matthew Fike published “Jung’s Letter to Major Donald E. Keyhoe”in the Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies.

  • Dr. Matthew Fike presented “It’s a Ghost Story: Reclaiming Marie Hay’s The Evil Vineyard” at the College English Association, San Antonio, TX.

  • Dr. Amanda Hiner published “Thirty Years, Thirty Ideas:  Women Writers and the Practice of Satire in the Long Eighteenth Century” in Women Writers Project (Women Writers Online).

  • Dr. Casey Cothran published an invited book chapter titled “Ecofeminism in Mystery and Detective Fiction” in The Routledge Handbook of Ecofeminism and Literature and presented a paper at the 2022 Victorians Institute Conference

  • Dr. Matthew Fike presented “Jung’s Letter to Major Donald E. Keyhoe” at the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies Conference, Highline College, Des Moines, WA.

  • Dr. Dustin M. Hoffman was invited to be a featured reader at the 27th Season of the Contemporary Writers Series at Aquinas College who are hosting a theme of "Working Titles: Working Class Voices in American Literature"

  • Dr. Amanda Hiner’s research from her book chapter “Equipping Students for Success in College and Beyond: Placing Critical Thinking Instruction at the Heart of a General Education Curriculum” was included in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s entry on critical thinking pedagogy.

  • Dr. Amanda Hiner published two invited book reviews, one for Eighteenth-Century Fiction and one for Humanities Net, and was invited to contribute an article on British women’s satire for the Northeastern University academic website and archive Women Writers Online and an article on teaching Anne Finch’s satiric poetry for a special topics book collection.

  • Dr. Allan Nail presented as an invited speaker on teaching banned books at the Winthrop NCTE/Literary Society Banned Books Presentation.

  • Dr. Mary Martin was the invited, featured poet at the Waterbean Poetry Night at the Mic in Huntersville, NC.
